Will AI fix your marketing? Not on its own

Abstract Navy And Magenta Graphic Representing Clarity Emerging From Ai Noise.

TLDR: AI will not fix your marketing on its own. It is a genuinely good way to do good marketing faster and cheaper, and close to useless pointed at marketing that was not working in the first place. Here is what that looks like in practice, and how to get real value from it.

Will AI fix your marketing?

No, not on its own. AI is a tool, and a genuinely good one. Point it at marketing that already knows who it is for and what it is trying to say, and it will help you do that faster, cheaper and more consistently than you could by hand. Point it at a blank strategy and it will help you produce more of nothing, quicker.

That distinction is the whole game, and it is the bit most businesses are missing right now.

What actually moved the needle

Recently I helped a large group of vet practices bring down the cost of every new enquiry by about 40%, with enquiries up by 50% over the same period. When I tell people that, they assume the AI did it.

It did a lot. We pointed AI at their marketing and asked it to look hard at what was working and what was not. It went through months of data in minutes, found things that were quietly wasting money, and rewrote the weak parts properly. Fast, and genuinely useful.

But the AI could not press the button. A person still had to make the changes, decide where the effort and the budget went, and judge what actually mattered. The AI made good marketing quicker and cheaper to run. The marketing itself, the thinking, was still human.

Why AI leaves so many businesses cold

Most owners I meet have had a go with AI and come away underwhelmed. They typed something into ChatGPT, got a page of bland words back, and thought, is that it.

They are not alone in trying. 54% of small businesses already use AI marketing tools, with another quarter planning to start this year (Constant Contact, Small Business Now, 2026). So the tools are everywhere. The results are not, and the reason is simple. Ask AI to be your strategy and it cannot help you. Ask it to carry out a strategy you have already thought through, and it flies.

What good marketing still needs

The tools keep changing. What makes marketing work does not. You still have to know who you are talking to, what they actually want, and why they should pick you over the business down the road. AI cannot hand you any of that. It has never met your customers, sat in your sales calls, or felt the thing that makes people choose you.

What it can do, once you have that clarity, is help you say it better and far faster. Draft the email, shape the blog, sharpen the ad, spot the pattern in the data. The clarity is yours. The speed is the machine’s.

How to actually use AI on your marketing

A few things worth doing, in order.

Get clear on the one customer you are writing for before you open a single tool. AI writes to nobody by default, and it shows.

Feed it your real material, your own words, your best sales conversations, a page that already sounds like you. It has far more to work with than a cold prompt.

Use it on the work you already know you should be doing, the follow-up you keep meaning to send, the content that never gets finished, rather than inventing new things to make.

Keep a human in the loop on every judgement call. The machine does the legwork. You still do the thinking.

The bottom line

AI will not fix your marketing. It will make good marketing faster, cheaper and a lot less lonely, which for a smaller business means hours of your week back and marketing that brings in enquiries rather than just filling a feed.

If you want a hand getting AI to actually pay off in your marketing, that is a lot of what I do as a fractional CMO, so do get in touch. And if you would rather roll your sleeves up and learn it hands-on, I am running a practical day on exactly this with York St John University in November.

FAQ

Can AI replace a marketer?
No. It replaces some of the legwork a marketer does, the drafting, the first pass at data, the repetitive production. The judgement, the strategy and the understanding of your customer still need a person. Who that person should be is a separate question, and if you are weighing it up I have written on what the fractional CMO role actually requires.

Why is my AI content bland?
Usually because it is writing for nobody in particular from a cold prompt. Give it a specific reader and feed it your own material, and it gets a lot closer to sounding like you.

Where should a small business start with AI marketing?
With the marketing, not the tool. Get clear on who you are for and what you want to say, then use AI to do that faster. Starting with the tool is why most people end up underwhelmed.

If you want a starting point that is about your business rather than the tools, run the free E-E-A-T Website Scorecard. It takes five minutes and tells you which trust and authority signals are missing before AI ever gets involved.
