From Rising Star to Investor Whisperer: 7 Mindsets I Brought Home from Yorkshire’s 42 Under 42 Dinner

Nine Years, One Dinner, and a Full‑Circle Moment

Back in 2016 I was a fresh‑faced “one to watch” on Yorkshire Business Insider’s 42 Under 42 list. Fast‑forward to 2025 and I’m sitting at the alumni table, watching a new cohort of founders prepare to scale in an economy that’s anything but forgiving.

What hasn’t changed? The raw electricity in a room where every conversation could turn into a joint venture, an advisory mandate—or a reality check. What has changed is my perspective: these days I’m a Fractional CMO helping growth‑stage companies turn investor curiosity into term sheets and sustainable revenue.

Below are the seven mindsets I scribbled down between dinner courses (and a few eton messes!). If you’re leading a scale‑up—or investing in one—consider this your pocket playbook for 2025.

1. Resilience Beats Perfect Timing

“If you wait for the perfect moment to start, you’ll never start.” – Graham Sweeney, Managing Partner, Schofield Sweeney

Markets wobble, interest rates hike, regulations shift. The founders who out‑perform are the ones who treat uncertainty as an operating condition, not a passing storm.

Try this: Identify one marketing experiment you can launch in the next 14 days—before the quarter ends and while competitors are still “waiting to see.”

2. Purpose Fuels Persistence

George Fairhall raised her first £70k by DM‑ing 2,000 strangers on LinkedIn. The reason investors bit? Her unshakable belief that hourly‑paid workers deserve better pay transparency.

When I coach founders before a pitch deck road‑show, we spend the first session clarifying why the company exists—in plain English—before touching a single slide.

3. Networks Compound Faster Than Capital

A single dinner table paired me with a:

  • Leeds‑based Salesforce consultancy founder tackling scale‑up challenges.

  • Website content lead at a large travel brand looking to sharpen organic reach.

  • Business‑development lead at a national law firm running 100+ events a year.

Those three chats opened more revenue doors than any cold campaign could. Show up, add value, follow up.

4. Collaboration Scales Faster Than Headcount

Serial founder Ashley Tate called three co‑founders the “sweet spot.” Different skill sets, shared vision, built‑in resilience.

In practice that means marketers must become collaboration architects: aligning legal, finance, product, and sales so growth doesn’t bottleneck in silos.

5. Short Horizons, Long Vision

Early‑stage decks love five‑year hockey sticks—investors don’t. Ashley’s advice: nail this month’s revenue first.

Action rule: for every annual marketing goal, create a 30‑day cash‑in milestone. At Fleek we’ve seen this discipline shave six weeks off average payback on ad spend.

6. Story First, Numbers Second

Investors don’t fund spreadsheets—they fund believable narratives backed by spreadsheets. Whether you’re raising or spending, lead with the story your audience needs to repeat in the next meeting they attend.

Quick example: Carrwood Park—after we reframed their pitch around “a workspace you’d be proud to host clients in,” organic traffic rose 400 % and agent fees dropped by two‑thirds.

7. Impact Is the New Differentiator

Laura Winson turned a depressing 0.006 % disability‑representation stat into a global modelling agency with 1,000+ talent. Impact isn’t a CSR add‑on; it’s a moat competitors can’t fake overnight.

Founders should ask: How does our marketing make customers feel like collaborators in that impact?

Putting the Mindsets to Work

Pick one mindset and answer these questions:

  1. Where are we currently behaving in the opposite way?

  2. What’s one experiment we can run in the next 30 days to shift?

  3. How will we measure success—revenue, runway, or reputation?
